The paper, “Moving forward from Cockcroft-Gault creatinine clearance to race-free estimated glomerular filtration rate to improve medication-related decision-making in adults across healthcare settings,” explains how U.S. healthcare providers can better estimate kidney function, especially for medication decisions, and guides practitioners through the rationale for using race-free eGFR equations and how to implement this change.

Traditionally, many health care providers use a method called Cockcroft-Gault estimated creatinine clearance (C-G eCrCL). Still, newer, more accurate, race-free equations called eGFR are recommended by experts and the FDA. Using these new methods, especially when adjusting for a person’s body size, can lead to better treatment choices. The paper promotes the adoption of these improved methods by clinics, labs, and health systems to ensure more accurate and consistent kidney assessments across the country.
