APhA-ASP Attends the APhA Institute on Substance Use Disorders in Salt Lake City

|

The UT Health Science Center College of Pharmacy’s APhA-ASP chapter had the pleasure of attending the APhA Institute on Substance Use Disorders in Salt Lake City from May 28th to 31st. The experience was impactful, offering opportunities to meet and learn from student pharmacists, specialists in the field, and healthcare professionals in long-term recovery across the country, gaining insight into the stigma and bias faced by individuals with substance use disorders (SUD) and how healthcare providers can better support patients in their recovery journey.

Throughout the week, attendees explored the science of substance use disorder (SUD) as a chronic and treatable condition, moving away from the idea of addiction as a moral failing. They discussed practical, evidence-based treatment approaches, highlighting the challenges of recovery. Participation in open AA, NA, and Al-Anon meetings provided personal stories of strength and hope, emphasizing that recovery is unique for each individual, rooted in connection and community. Attendees also received training on recognizing and responding to opioid overdoses, learning to administer life-saving interventions such as Naloxone and Nalmefene, reinforcing their roles as clinicians and advocates.

The APhA-ASP chapter was also recognized as the National Second Runner-Up for the 2023-2024 Operation Substance Use Disorders project cycle. As a national award recipient, the chapter was invited to create and share a poster highlighting its efforts, impact, and the harm reduction strategies it brought to our communities.
