On March 13, a select group of the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Pharmacy P3 and P4 pharmacy students and 4th-year UT Health Science Center College of Medicine students participated in an interprofessional education (IPE) event with an advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) simulation at the UTHSC Center for Healthcare Improvement and Patient Simulation (CHIPS).
The goal for this event was to pilot an IPE simulation for 4th year medical students in a Capstone Course. Pharmacy students who had participated in the ACLS elective during their P3 year and received AHA ACLS provider certification were invited to participate and serve as the “pharmacist” responding to a simulated code event. This was a great experience, allowing medical and pharmacy students to collaborate and work as a team, each bringing their unique skills to the experience.

This was the second time pharmacy students have participated in this event with the College of Medicine. The first in October 2023, P4 students Madeline Armstrong, Melissa Reynolds, Sydni Metzmeier, Raquel Lockridge, Nathan Doherty, and Marshia Vaiden participated. In March 2024, 3 P3 students (Kimberly Kinget, Diego Benavides, and Christian Phillips) participated alongside P4s (Madeline Armstrong, Melissa Reynolds, Sydni Metzmeier) who were able to also serve as mentors.
This unique experience was valuable for all involved, demonstrating how successful teamwork, mutual respect, and effective communication can ultimately improve patient outcomes.
