Student pharmacist conducts research for Johnson & Johnson

|

Brianna Hawkins, a P3 student on the UTHSC College of Pharmacy’s Nashville campus, had her work as a Clinical Scientist Graduate Oncology Intern published on the homepage for Johnson & Johnson.

Hawkins is working with the company this summer, doing research on patients with multiple myeloma, a type of cancer. Specifically, she is doing research on a subset of patients with plasmacytomas.

“We’re looking to see how some patients respond to certain medications, looking at the side effects, and trying to see how we can improve the medications to decrease any side effects,” Hawkins said.

Prior to entering pharmacy school, Hawkins had a career in oncology clinical research and drug development. Once she completes her pharmacy degree, she hopes to work on the pharmacy side of oncology. She said this internship, along with being a student in the College of Pharmacy, is setting her up well to do that.

“It truly makes my heart smile to see myself and the college represented on this level,” Hawkins said. “I am so honored to be a part of this school, and I am committed to embodying its vision and mission.”
