UTHSC APhA-ASP Chapter Attends APhA Annual Meeting in Nashville

|

The UTHSC chapter of the APhA-ASP attended the national organization’s Annual Meeting in Nashville in March and was recognized as national Second Runner-Up for the Division A Chapter Achievement Award. The recognition was for the chapter’s efforts with Operation Diabetes.

Chapter President Kara Provence (P3, Memphis) was also elected as a National Member at-large. She will now be able to serve the National Executive Committee over the next year and travel to chapters across the country.

The APhA–ASP Chapter Achievement Awards (CAA) Program was established in 1974 to recognize outstanding activities of APhA–ASP chapters at the schools and colleges of pharmacy in the United States and Puerto Rico. The program is an extension of APhA–ASP’s mission to provide opportunities for professional growth and improve patient care while advancing the future of pharmacy. The awards structure is designed to recognize superior programming among chapters that envision the future of pharmacy by creating opportunities for student participation. The awards program also embraces the core ideas of APhA–ASP’s mission to create new standards of leadership, professionalism, membership, patient care, and legislative advocacy among student pharmacists nationwide.

Operation Diabetes seeks to help pharmacists and student pharmacists identify individuals in the community with previously undiagnosed diabetes and those who are at risk for developing the disease. In addition, the program seeks to increase overall awareness of diabetes and the role pharmacists play in prevention and managing the effects of diabetes. Conducting blood glucose screenings and educating the public on the risk factors for diabetes, the importance of medication compliance and tight control on blood glucose student pharmacists can help individuals across the nation improve their quality of life.
