Hong SH, Tak S. Uptake of generic drug discount program among vulnerable populations. JAMA Intern Med. Published online September 22, 2014.

Dr. Song Hee Hong, associate professor of Clinical Pharmacy, published a study in JAMA Internal Medicine that received media attention from both Time Magazine and Reuters Health (Sep. 22, 2014). Dr. Hong and his coauthor examined national use of generic drug discount programs that most retail pharmacies have introduced to allow patients to pay nominal fees ($4) for filling prescriptions with generic drugs. They reported a dramatic increase in the use of gneric drug discount programs (23.1% in 2010 versus 3.6% in 2006). Further, generic drug discount programs were more valued among the elderly, sicker, and uninsured populations, but equally valued across different educational levels, incomes, and racial/ethnic groups.
