Two PhD candidates in the Pharmaceutical Sciences Graduate Program, Ashit Trivedi and Bivash Mandal, will be recognized for excellence in graduate education and research at the 2014 American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) Annual Meeting and Exposition. The meeting takes place on November 2nd-6th in San Diego, California and is designed to promote the field of pharmaceutical sciences and connect members involved in the discovery, development, and manufacture of pharmaceutical products and therapies. AAPS is the premier professional organization in the pharmaceutical sciences with more than 10,000 members employed in academia, industry, government, and other research institutes worldwide. Trivedi will receive the 2014 AAPS Graduate Student Research in Pharmacokinetics, Pharmacodynamics, and Drug Metabolism and Clinical Pharmacology and Translational Research Award for his work involving novel antituberculosis agents called spectinamides. Likewise, Mandal will be presented with the 2014 AAPS Graduate Student Research in Formulation Design and Development Award for his work in targeted drug delivery to EGFR-overexpressing lung cancer cells. Recipients of the awards are recognized for excellence in graduate education in these respective concentrations as well as areas of drug metabolism, pharmacology, toxicology, and other related disciplines. To apply for the awards, the students independently prepared an application package containing the nomination form, a recommendation letter from respective advisors, provided a 1,000 word synopsis of their doctoral research highlighting the contribution, novelty, and results of their research, and submitted an abstract for a poster presentation.  The student advisor for Trivedi, Dr. Bernd Meibohm, describes the magnitude of receiving the individual recognition by reporting that “this is one of the highest awards you can achieve as a graduate student in Pharmaceutical Sciences.” Meibohm also states that this is the first time two students from UTCOP have received the awards in the same year. The student advisor for Mandal is Dr. George Wood.  Congratulations to both Trivedi and Mandal for their outstanding achievements!
