Government Rotations 2013-2014

|

As part of the diverse pharmacy practice experiences offered by UTCOP, 27 students had the opportunity to participate in one of several different government rotations. The program began in 2005 and has since expanded to include more sites. Student pharmacists travel across the United States to provide patient care as part of the Indian Health Service (IHS) program in Arizona and Wyoming , the United States Air Force in Alaska, and the United States Army in Kentucky. While on rotation, students learn about government-based pharmacy practice and the culture of the patients they serve. This year one of our newly graduated PharmD students, Keysha Ray, matched for a residency at Sells Indian Hospital in Arizona as a direct result of her previous advanced pharmacy practice experience there.

Kayla Merideth and Jessica Draper in Wyoming. “We had a wonderful experience living on Wind River Indian Reservation and working at Indian Health Services in Wyoming. It was eye-opening being exposed to a different culture and learning how much culture can affect their views on their own healthcare and how you approach treating them. We had the opportunity to do a lot of one-on-one sessions, especially relating to diabetes and anticoagulation. It definitely enhanced our clinical and counseling skills. On the weekends we explored Jackson Falls, snowmobiled in Yellowstone, experienced Thermopolis and the Hot Springs, hiked Sinks Canyon, saw Sacajawea’s grave, and visited Denver. It was a once in a lifetime experience that we will cherish.”
