My commitment to addressing healthcare disparities in underserved communities inspired me to pursue the Rural Health Certificate from the UT Health Science Center College of Pharmacy. Growing up in Southeast Alabama significantly influenced this decision, as I witnessed the unique barriers faced by rural populations, including a lack of healthcare providers and various social and cultural factors.
The Rural Health Certificate program will equip me with the tools needed to make a meaningful difference in overcoming these challenges and improving healthcare access for those in need.
What I enjoy most about the Rural Health Certificate program is the opportunity to learn practical strategies for addressing healthcare disparities in rural communities. The program provides a focused approach to understanding the unique needs of these populations through case studies, real-world projects, and insights from Tyler Melton, PharmD, an expert with extensive experience in rural health and an assistant professor in the College of Pharmacy.
I completed my IPPE Community Summer Rotation at an independent pharmacy located within a doctor’s office. A typical day during my rural health rotation was both hands-on and highly educational, as I worked alongside healthcare providers to address the unique needs of rural patients. My day often began with patient consultations, where I focused on medication counseling, discussing proper use, potential side effects, and strategies for managing chronic conditions like diabetes and hypertension. I also administered vaccinations.
The Rural Health Certificate program has broadened my understanding of rural health in Tennessee by emphasizing the diverse challenges faced by different regions. While common barriers, such as provider shortages and limited resources, exist across rural areas, each community has unique social, economic, and cultural factors that shape its healthcare needs and solutions.
Obtaining the Rural Health Certificate will equip me with specialized knowledge and skills to tackle healthcare challenges in rural communities in Tennessee. With this certificate, I will be prepared to address common health concerns in rural areas, such as managing chronic diseases, providing education and resources related to opioids, and improving adherence to treatment plans. Additionally, the certificate will enhance my ability to work effectively within interdisciplinary teams, collaborating with other healthcare providers and local organizations to deliver comprehensive care. By understanding the unique dynamics of rural communities, I can help bridge healthcare gaps, advocate for patient-centered solutions, and contribute to building a more accessible and equitable healthcare system for rural Tennesseans.
About the Rural Health Certificate Program
The Rural Health Certificate promotes access to health care and pharmacy services in rural areas. It prepares future pharmacists at the UT Health Science Center College of Pharmacy with the expertise needed to practice in diverse rural health care settings by incorporating pharmacy curricula, experiential learning, and rural pharmacy partnerships.
