Two UTHSC College of Pharmacy faculty were recognized in the Daily Memphian for their groundbreaking work on a new COVID drug. Dr. Wei Li, UTHSC Distinguished Professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and director of the UTHSC College of Pharmacy Drug Discovery Center, and Dr. Duane Miller, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, were instrumental in creating the structure for the drug Sabizabulin, which has now been submitted to the FDA for emergency use authorization (EUA) as a new treatment for the sickest COVID patients.

Li and Miller were assisted in their efforts by Dr. Jianjun Chen, a former graduate student in Dr. Li’s lab and Dr. Zhongzhi (Jim) Wu, formerly a senior chemist at GTx and now an assistant professor in Dr. Li’s lab. “We are extremely proud of the work done by Dr. Li and Dr. Miller and their lab cohort in contributing to this important milestone in combatting COVID,” said Marie Chisholm-Burns, Dean of the UTHSC College of Pharmacy.
