UT College of Pharmacy Introduces Candidates to Dual Degree Program

|

On February 3, 2017, the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences hosted a group of undergraduate students and faculty from local and out of state universities (Arkansas State, Christian Brothers, Maryville College, and University of Memphis) to the first PharmD/PhD open house. During the event, current PharmD/PhD students , including Dr. Sarah Whaley, Dr. Andy Nishimoto, Rachel Ness, Greg Phelps, and Kelli Gerth, shared the reasons behind their decisions to earn their PharmD and PhD degrees at UTHSC and the College of Pharmacy.

Speakers included:

  • Ted Cory, Assistant Professor of Clinical Pharmacy, Dr. David Rogers, First Tennessee Chair of Excellence in Clinical Pharmacy, and Dr. Ryan Yates, Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences, who each hold PharmD and PhD degrees, spoke about their experiences earning the two degrees and encouraged students to join the program.
  • Angela Finerson, Director of Admissions and Alumni Affairs, shared information about the PharmD program.
  • Hassan Almoazen, Director of Pharmaceutical Sciences PhD and PharmD dual degree program, shared information about admission into the program as well as research opportunities available to students at UTHSC and St. Jude.

A tour of the College of Pharmacy and lab spaces took place after the presentations. Attendance was so large that the line to tour the labs led out the door and into the hallway.

The dual degree PharmD/PhD program is designed to train highly qualified clinician-researchers who can operate at the interface between basic research and clinical care. It produces superb scientists who lead the path between research innovations and clinical settings.  The UT College of Pharmacy is one of the only pharmacy schools in the country to offer such an innovative program.
