In 2013, Dean Marie Chisholm-Burns and her husband, John F. Burns, decided they wanted to leave a legacy and help provide opportunities for UTHSC College of Pharmacy students by creating an endowed scholarship. The Dean Chisholm-Burns First Scholarship was fully endowed and awarded for the first time in 2016.
The Dean Chisholm-Burns First Scholarship is given to first-year UTHSC College of Pharmacy students who are the first person in their immediate family to graduate with a Bachelor’s Degree or higher. To be eligible to receive the First Scholarship in their second year of pharmacy school, recipients must maintain a 3.0 GPA and be in good academic and professional standing.
“I believe in stewardship and giving back,” said Chisholm-Burns. “Although this is my first endowment at UTHSC, this is not my first endowed scholarship. My family is currently working on an endowment in honor of my parents at Georgia College and State University because not only do we believe in giving back, but more importantly we want to make a difference. Education is critical in making a difference in people’s lives and improving the community.”
