During the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) Annual meeting in Baltimore, Maryland in early March, the UT chapter of APhA-Academy of Student Pharmacists (ASP) was recognized nationally as both an overall chapter and for its Generation Rx patient care committee.

Generation Rx was recognized as National 2nd Runner Up for several reasons. They collaborated with Wingate College of Pharmacy to create and publish a coloring book about medication safety. The committee in Memphis hosted a “Teddy Bear Check-Up” in collaboration with International Pharmaceutical Students Federation (IPSF), Student National Pharmacists Association (SNPhA) and the UT Colleges of Nursing, Medicine, and Dentistry. The event allowed kindergarteners to bring their teddy bears to different stations for “check-ups” for student pharmacists to educate them on important health topics. Additionally, Generation Rx promoted their committee with radio appearances, local events, and various other media, showcasing the profession of pharmacy and the importance of medication safety. Congratulations Generation Rx!

The UT chapter of APhA-ASP was recognized as a whole for its outstanding patient care and leadership as First Runner-up for the Chapter Achievement Award in Division A. Many events contributed to this success. A leadership development series was created to help APhA-ASP Executive Committee members mentor P1 members-at-large. Operation Heart chairs on the Knoxville campus held Ankle Brachial Index (ABI) screenings at community pharmacies in the area to screen for peripheral artery disease. An ad on the side of bus was funded for two months in Memphis around American Pharmacist Month to promote the pharmacy profession and the UT APhA-ASP chapter. The Race for the Summitt was held on both the Knoxville and Memphis campuses, raising money for the Pat Summitt Foundation benefitting Alzheimer research. Health education on a longitudinal basis was instituted by a group of patient care committees to help patrons at the Benjamin L. Hooks Library in Memphis; many in this population are homeless and would not have access to health education elsewhere. Congratulations APhA-ASP!
