Dr. Justin Gatwood’s application to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Health Disparities Loan Repayment Program was recently approved for funding by the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD). The NIH Loan Repayment Programs (LRP) were established by Congress and designed to recruit and retain highly qualified health professionals into biomedical or bio-behavioral research careers. Dr. Gatwood is an assistant professor of Clinical Pharmacy on the Nashville campus. Dr. Gatwood’s research focuses mainly on improving medication adherence in patients with chronic disease with a special interest in leveraging large databases as well as mobile health techniques and tools that may be applied during the treatment process. The project associated with his funded LRP focuses on identifying geographic variation in adherence to diabetes treatment among veterans and whether patterns exist in therapeutic outcomes among those remaining persistent to therapy.
