Chisholm-Burns to Receive ASHP Pharmacy Practice Research Award

g_-c4T_uvVuMMCT9_Or3VOB-TZJqIqDF7IIpdO8f-tIThe ASHP Research and Education Foundation will honor Dean Marie Chisholm-Burns, PharmD, MPH, MBA, FCCP, FASHP, at this year’s Literature Awards during the 2014 ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting in Anaheim, California. The Literature Awards Program was established in 1971 and recognizes pharmacists for their leadership in safe and effective medication use. This foundation honors important contributions by pharmacists to the biomedical literature with emphasis on originality, innovation and impact of the contributed article. Dean Chisholm-Burns will be awarded the Pharmacy Practice Research Award for her work, “Improving Outcomes of Renal Transplant Recipients with Behavioral Adherence Contracts: A Randomized Controlled Trial.” Dr. Chisholm-Burns’ work in the field of transplantation has been extensive. She has conducted numerous studies regarding medication adherence among transplant recipients, including evaluations of intervention services to promote adherence in this patient population. She also has examined risk factors for non-adherence, barriers to adherence, and biopsychosocial factors affecting transplant recipients, such as quality of life, social support and employment. As a result of the research conducted by Dr. Chisholm-Burns, health care professionals have a more complete understanding of the challenges and experiences of solid organ transplant recipients. Dr. Chisholm-Burns also received the ASHP Foundation’s Pharmacy Practice Research Award in 2011 for her evaluation demonstrating the value of pharmacist-provided patient care. This project was sponsored by the ASHP Foundation, published in Medical Care, and received attention in mainstream media outlets such as US News & World Report. Additionally, regarding pharmacy education and the scholarship of teaching, Dr. Chisholm- Burns has published several textbooks that have been adopted in many schools of pharmacy, medicine and nursing. In 2008 and 2011, textbooks co-edited by Dr. Chisholm-Burns, Pharmacotherapy Principles and Practice and Pharmacy Management, Leadership, Marketing, and Finance, respectively, received the American Medical Writers Association’s Medical Book Award. She also twice has been the recipient of the Rufus A. Lyman Award for most outstanding publication in the American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education (1996 and 2007). Dr. Chisholm-Burns is active in service to the pharmacy profession in many leadership roles, and she has received numerous awards and honors, including the ASHP Award of Excellence.
