The Cardinal Health Independent Pharmacy Best Practices Guide is an annual compilation of innovative programs that improve patient outcomes, drive business results and promote community involvement. Pharmacies were selected for implementing creative methods to improve patient care in a ever-changing healthcare setting. They excelled in three categories that are vital to the success of independent pharmacies; Wellness, Retail and Business practices.
Mac’s Pharmacy created a program, called MediSync and MediSync Plus, that synchronizes and packages monthly prescription refills in ways that greatly improve patients’ success of taking the correct medications at the correct time. These programs are especially helpful for older patients and those with difficult medication regimens. Through this program, the pharmacy takes on the responsibility managing the medications, coordinating refills, contacting prescribers for prior authorizations and medication changes. The program contacts patients one day prior to the refill date to determine if the patient has any medication left. The MediSync Plus program uses Dispill, a multi-dose packaging system that organizes a month’s worth of medication in a single, sequential, color-coded packet. These programs resulted in nearly doubled patient adherence, leading to an average of six more refills per prescription, per year.
Cardinal Health serves more than 8,000 independent pharmacies nationwide. By serving such a large number of pharmacies, Cardinal Health is well positioned to recognize the nation’s best practices.
Mac’s Pharmacy has two locations that are run by Mac Wilhoit (Class of 1977) and his son Mike Wilhoit (Class of 2008). Mac’s Pharmacy will receive a direct donation for $3,500 from Cardinal Health for the pharmacy school or pharmacy association of their choice.
