Amanda Howard-Thompson, PharmD, BCPS, associate professor of Clinical Pharmacy was appointed by the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) to the editorial advisory board of Pharmacy Today for a three-year term. Dr. Howard-Thompson initially discovered this interest through previous affiliations with the APhA Handbook of Nonprescription Drugs and AACP’s Self Care Therapeutics and Nonprescription Medications Special Interest Group. When asked about what opportunities are available with this position, Howard-Thompson writes, “I hope to use this position to represent my college, to gain opportunities for publishing not only through Pharmacy Today but with other collaborators all over the United States, and to understand more about what goes into putting together a publication like Pharmacy Today to make it a success.”
Her previous experience includes serving as a peer reviewer extends to her time as a pharmacy resident. Her service as a reviewer for American Family Physician, the Journal of Family Practice, the Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine, Archives of Disease in Childhood, and the APhA Handbook of Nonprescription Drugs has prepared Howard-Thompson for her first editorial board experience. Her goals for this experience include “adding to the content of the publication and making it relevant to all pharmacists that read it” and “giv[ing] students and other faculty opportunities to contribute to this publication, if they so wish.”
This journal, published monthly by APhA, primarily addresses medication therapy management (MTM) practices and effective techniques for the improvement of the practice. Features of the journal also include a policy and advocacy section, which attracts pharmacists from every specialty group. Howard-Thompson recognizes the impact of the journal and hopes to continue this influence among all pharmacists.
